How to Earn Airline Miles (and Actually Use Them!) Without Flying Every Week
by Evi
Let’s talk about airline miles, those mysterious little loyalty rewards that can magically turn into free flights, lounge access, or sweet seat upgrades. While they sound like something only business travelers rack up on weekly red-eyes, the truth is: you too can earn and use miles smartly, even if you don’t fly every month.
Here’s how to work the system like a savvy traveler.
1.Stick to One Airline (or Alliance) If You Don’t Travel Often
If you’re not a frequent flyer, loyalty pays off. Pick one airline, or better, an airline alliance like Star Alliance, and stick with it for your trips.
Why? Because miles add up faster when you consistently credit them to the same program. So instead of scattering points across five airlines, focus on one and grow your balance meaningfully.
Example: Even if you’re not flying with your preferred airline, you can still earn miles by flying with partner airlines in the same alliance:
Turkish Airlines is part of Star Alliance, you can earn miles by flying Lufthansa, ANA, United, etc.
Just make sure to enter your Miles&Smiles number during booking.
2.Redeem Miles for Discounts on Flights
Many airline programs let you redeem miles directly for discounts, not just full flights. That means you don’t need to save up 50,000 miles to go somewhere for free, even 5,000 miles might save you €50–100 on your next ticket.
This is perfect for occasional travelers: you’re using your miles efficiently and often.
3.Airport Lounges: The Sweet Perk of Elite Status
Earn enough miles and maintain your loyalty program status, and you may be treated like travel royalty.
Elite status usually comes with:
Access to airport lounges (hello, free coffee, snacks, and peace)
Priority boarding and check-in
Extra baggage allowance
Seat upgrades (hello, extra legroom)
Even if you’re not chasing platinum tiers, some programs allow lounge access on individual tickets if booked with miles at higher fare classes.
4.Collect Points Without Flying (Yes, Really)
Miles don’t only come from the sky.
Using Revolut (or another reward-savvy bank card) can help you rack up everyday spending points. From groceries to coffee, your purchases earn points, which can then be converted into airline miles. Check your Revolut app, activate the Rev Points program to collect points which you will convert to miles to one of the cooperating airlines like Turkish Airlines, British Airways, Qatar Airways, Air France, Transavia etc.
5.Spotlight: Turkish Airlines’ Miles & Smiles Program
Turkish Airlines has one of the most generous and flexible frequent flyer programs, especially if you fly internationally.
Earn miles on flights with Turkish Airlines or any Star Alliance partner.
Redeem for free tickets or upgrades on Turkish Airlines or other partners like Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, and United.
Use miles for shopping, hotel bookings, or car rentals via their website.
Elite cardholders (Classic Plus, Elite, Elite Plus) enjoy lounge access, extra baggage, and priority perks.
Pro tip: Turkish Airlines miles last 3 years, but you can extend them for a small fee if you’re close to an award goal.
6.Earn Miles Through Affiliate Programs (Like Hotels, Car Rentals & More)
Did you know that you can earn miles even when you’re not flying, just by booking your hotel?
Many airlines, including Turkish Airlines, have affiliate partnerships with companies like Booking.com, Hotels.com and major rental car brands. If you access these sites through the airline’s website, you’ll earn miles for every euro or dollar you spend, turning your regular hotel booking into a step toward your next free flight.
For example, Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles program has a partnership with Booking.com Just head to the Turkish Airlines website, find the hotel booking section, and you’ll be redirected to booking.com. From there, every booking you make will earn you Miles&Smiles points, automatically.
This works great because:
The prices are the same as if you booked directly
You earn miles for something you’d book anyway
You can often still take advantage of promotions and loyalty discounts from the hotel
Other services that often offer miles through airline partnerships:
Rental cars
Travel insurance
Tours and activities
Online shopping portals
7.Use Airline Shopping Portals
Most major airlines have online shopping portals (like Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles Shopping, British Airways eStore, etc.) where you earn miles just by shopping at popular retailers (Amazon, Nike, Apple, Booking.com, etc.).
Just start your shopping session from the airline’s portal.
Example: Spend €100 at Nike via the portal = earn 500+ miles.
8.Sign Up for Airline Promotions
Always register for bonus mile promotions:
Airlines frequently offer double miles, welcome bonuses, or promotions for new routes.
Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles sends these via email, don’t skip those newsletters!
With airline miles, it’s all about playing the long game smartly—and with tricks like affiliate bookings and everyday spending, even casual travelers can unlock amazing travel perks faster than they’d expect.
