Two Perfect Days in Siem Reap: A Travel Guide
Day 1: A Blend of Markets, Temples, and Sunset Views
Start your day with an early morning walk around the Old Market (Psar Chaa). As the sun rises, the market comes alive with the sounds and sights of vendors setting up their stalls. It's a sensory overload of colors, smells, and activity. Fresh produce, exotic spices, and local handicrafts line the narrow aisles, offering a glimpse into the daily life of Siem Reap's residents. Don’t forget to haggle a bit – it’s part of the fun!
Next, make your way to Wat Bo, one of Siem Reap's oldest temples. This serene, functioning temple is a beautiful escape from the hustle and bustle of the market. As you wander through the peaceful grounds, you'll find stunning murals depicting scenes from the Reamker (the Cambodian version of the Ramayana), and you might even catch monks going about their daily routines. It's a perfect spot to soak in some tranquility and history.
By now, you must be craving a snack. Head over to WILD - Creative Bar & Spring Rolls Restaurant. Nestled in a charming garden, this place is a hidden gem. Order a refreshing drink and one of their creative spring rolls. With unique flavors and a relaxing ambiance, it's the perfect place to recharge before your afternoon adventures.
After your break, get ready for an afternoon tour to Tonle Sap and Kampong Phluk village. This tour, booked through Airbnb, is an immersive experience that takes you through local markets and vendors, giving you a real taste of Cambodian life. Kampong Phluk, a village built on stilts, is particularly fascinating. As you navigate the waterways, you'll see how the locals adapt to the rhythm of the lake.
As the day winds down, you’ll be treated to a magical boat tour on Tonle Sap Lake. Witnessing the sunset here is nothing short of spectacular. The sky transforms into a canvas of pinks, oranges, and purples, reflecting off the vast expanse of water. It's a moment you'll want to capture, both with your camera and in your memory.
Back in the city, cool off with an afternoon dip at your hotel pool – a well-deserved break after a day full of exploration. For dinner, make your way to Spoons Restaurant. This isn’t just a place to eat; it's an experience. Run by EGBOK (Everything’s Gonna Be OK), a local organization that provides hospitality training to underprivileged youth, Spoons offers fantastic food and even better service. Day 2: Temples, Traditions, and Treats
Rise and shine! Your day begins with a pre-dawn pick-up at 4:30 AM for a sunrise tour of Angkor Wat, booked through Viator. Arriving at the temple complex around 5:00 AM, you'll make your way through the darkness with a flashlight, securing a prime spot in front of the lake. As the first light of day begins to break, Angkor Wat slowly reveals itself, reflected beautifully in the still waters. This moment is nothing short of magical and sets the tone for an incredible day of exploration.
Angkor Wat, constructed in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II, is the largest religious monument in the world. Originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, it later transformed into a Buddhist temple. The intricate bas-reliefs and towering spires are a testament to the ingenuity and devotion of the Khmer Empire.
After exploring Angkor Wat, your tour continues with a stop at a local restaurant for a traditional Khmer breakfast. Enjoy a hearty meal that might include dishes like Bai Sach Chrouk (grilled pork with rice) or a comforting bowl of Kuy Teav (noodle soup).
Next, you’ll get to taste Nok Akor cakes from a local vendor. These sweet, bite-sized cakes made from rice flour and coconut milk are a delicious treat and a perfect way to experience local flavors.
Recharged and ready, you'll continue your exploration of the Angkor Archaeological Park. Your next stop is Ta Prohm, the "Tomb Raider" temple. Famous for its picturesque ruins overgrown with massive tree roots, Ta Prohm exudes a mysterious and enchanting atmosphere. Built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, it was originally a Buddhist monastery and university.
After Ta Prohm, the tour moves on to Bayon Temple, renowned for its enigmatic smiling stone faces. Located in the center of Angkor Thom, Bayon features 54 towers adorned with 216 faces, believed to represent the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara or King Jayavarman VII himself. This temple is a stunning example of the Khmer architectural genius and spiritual depth.
The next temple on your tour is Baphuon, a massive temple mountain built in the mid-11th century. Recently restored, Baphuon offers impressive views and a fascinating history, having served as a major Hindu temple before being converted to a Buddhist site in the 15th century.
Next you will visit the Terrace of the Elephants which is known in some records as the Terrace of Honor, in front of the Royal Palace and the Terrace of the Leper King which was used for ceremonial cremations and a statue of the God of Death fits the bill.
The last stop is at The South Gate of Angkor Thom is city gate dating to the 12th century with carved faces, plus stone figures lining a causeway.
By 12:30 PM, you'll be back in Siem Reap, brimming with awe and ready for some well-deserved relaxation.
After an exhilarating morning, it's time to unwind. Head to one of Siem Reap’s many spas for a traditional Khmer massage or a soothing foot massage. This will help you relax your muscles and rejuvenate your spirit after a morning of exploration.
As the afternoon turns to evening, take a leisurely stroll through Pub Street. This vibrant area is packed with energy, bustling with tourists and locals alike. For dinner, head to Mesa Restaurant for an excellent Lok Lak dish. This Cambodian specialty, featuring marinated beef with a tangy lime and black pepper dipping sauce, is a must-try.
After dinner, wander through the Night Market, where local artists exhibit their work, offering everything from paintings and sculptures to handmade jewelry. If you're up for a longer walk, make your way to the Made in Cambodia Market, which showcases high-quality, locally made products. It's a great place to pick up unique souvenirs and support local artisans.
